Quartz with slight Amethyst and Sepiolite
Quartz with slight Amethyst and Sepiolite
Here is a rather large quartz piece from Anhui, China with sepiolite across the surface. When we observe the side of the quartz with the sepiolite we can also see an elegant skirting of micro-quartz crystals which elevates the overall aesthetics of this specimen. The bottom portion of this piece is not fully terminated, so we can assume this piece was separated from its matrix after being mined out. For a piece of this size, it is rather complete!
An interesting thing about sepiolite in Anhui quartz is that on the surface, it appears as white lines, but when it is included in the quartz, it is often in ball form and causes yellow coloration where it is concentrated.
While there is yellow and purple coloration occurring in this quartz piece, I would not refer to it as an ametrine piece, but rather a quartz piece. The yellow comes from the sepiolite inclusion and not from suspended hydrous iron oxide like in natural citrine.
Locale: Anhui Province, China
Dimensions: 6.5 x 3.3 x 12.4 cm
